WitShop are a fresh new company launched in Summer 2013. They have quickly proved to be popular, with stockists to include Liberty of London, The Barbican Centre and Magma Bookstores, with interest shown from Urban Outfitters and The Design Museum. Brighton based creative business WitShop put the fun back into functional with their range of slick stationery and gifts. The brains behind the brand are Jakob and Freya, a couple who met while studying furniture design 8 years ago. The items they produce have a clean, elegant look, as if the original object has been stripped down and the essential parts put back together with a generous dose of quietly clever style. From the classy letterpress printed and lasercut Perpetual Calendar, to the set of notebooks celebrating the styles of maths papers- the products reflect WitShop’s respect for traditional techniques and materials whilst always remaining highly contemporary

WitShop play a large role in the manufacturing of the products and many items are handmade or hand finished inhouse. WitShop’s range encompasses a variety of printing techniques which include letterpress and risograph printing. There is also an emphasis on quality, the textures of paper and the simplicity of raw materials. All papers are recycled and everything is produced in the UK with many products being produced in their home county of Yorkshire.

Ideas for designs come from daily observations and looking at how a regular product can be developed to become something new and give it something interestingthat element of Wit. An example of Witshop’s slant on a traditional idea to create something new is evident in their Recipe Notecards which are sold in a pack of 5, each with an illustrated line drawing and a tear-off recipe on the inside.

WitShop is a company with strong branding, interesting products and ethical values. They are a company to watch with plenty more high quality products in the pipeline for 2014.
